The Cage

By Tararith

Radio, television and newspapers surround with sound
people who listen afraid of their powers.
All the time spreading their stories to build Cambodia,
while the Khmer are poor and shivering, staggering and pitying themselves.
The news spreads loudly - a strong but empty facade.
And right behind is the corruption. There is no purity.
Broadcasts show progress but reality shows deprivation.
The high ranking media moguls are always corrupt
and ignore those who die as they climb to their goals.
The problems – the corruption, the land grabs, the poverty –
these never appear in the newspapers.
News only celebrates the pomp and ceremony of the powerful,
and to speak the truth would be to lose one’s job.
