There was a time when the Khmer had hope
that we no longer would be poor,
hope in a new leader
from abroad with economics know how.
But our hopes were dashed.
Oppression reigned; arrests and killing,
hunger and death arrived instead.
We remember this terrible time
when Cambodians suffered
such a hard life with no food.
How could an educated economist destroy our country?
How could he betray and destroy our nation?
